Improvisation Concepts

Improvisation means creating music in the moment. The secret is knowing which notes sound strong over a given chord, and using approach notes to add color and movement.

1

Chord Tones

Root, 3rd, 5th, 7th — these always sound strong and resolved. They are your "home base."

2

Approach Notes

Notes a half-step above or below a chord tone. They create tension that resolves beautifully.

3

Rhythmic Variety

Not just what notes — but when. Mix long tones, short bursts, and rests for a natural feel.
